Bible and Tools

One thing that’s important to me is my Bible! It’s my blueprint of life. Now, half the time I have to read Scriptures multiple times to understand its meaning, and even then I can still be confused. At the same time, I have tools and resources to help me work through it.

There are 66 books in the Bible and some books are very short, very long, or somewhere in between. My pastor always mentions materials needed to study The Word and support in our quiet time. Before I get to materials, I wanted to give a brief explanation about “quiet time”.

It’s a time where you spend with the Lord. People call it “quiet time”, “devotional’ or “sacred time” to refer to the time you personally spend with God. In this time, you read His word (Bible), you journal your thoughts, feelings, and what you learned. Then you pray. When you pray, you pray for the world, city, town, friends, and family, what God has put on your heart (meaning what has been on your mind and what you feel needs to be prayed for), and yourself. The time that is recommended is an hour or more. Now I caution you not to be afraid. Everyone starts somewhere, I started 10-15 minutes in the beginning and worked my way up to now spending 40 minutes. It takes time and there’s grace for you while you learn and grow πŸ™‚

Now that we have an understanding, here are materials you need for your quiet time:

-Bible: There are over 62 English translations written in various styles and 700 other languages. I recommend ESV (English Standard Version 2006), NLT (New Living Translation), NIV (New International Version), or CSB (Christian Standard Bible) English translations.

-Folder: A folder is used to keep journal entries, devotionals, scriptures you want to memorize, quotes ad so much more. You can get a single one or a package at Walmart, Target or local store.

-Journal/Notebook: This is where you can write a summary of the chapter you read, thoughts, what the Holy Spirit is ministering (telling) you, and questions. You can find a great selection of sizes, designs, and prices at your local store. I personally like to go to Walmart.

-Pens/Highlighters: You need writing utensils to write things down! Also, I would use highlighters to highlight important scriptures and verses. You could use Sharpie, Midliner, or Studio Series (found at Barnes & Noble) for highlighters. For pens, I love G-2 Pilot and Papermate Inkjoy, but you can use whatever you like!

-Index Cards: During your quiet times you can use the index cards to write out your favorite verse and/or a verse you want to memorize. (More on scripture memorization later!)

The journey to building a relationship with our Heavenly Father takes a lifetime and many Christians who’ve followed Jesus for 20, 30, 40, or 50 years are still learning too. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to show up every day. You’ll see how strong and deeply connected you’ll feel.

I love you. You’re worthy. Light your light shine bright.
